A sampling plan that works

The point of a sampler is to find your strength without guesswork. Rushing through it defeats the purpose.

1. Open the can nearest to what you use now. That isn't always the 5mg. New to pouches, or used to ZYN at 3mg or 6mg? Start at 5mg. Already comfortable around 10mg? Start at 10mg and leave the 5mg for later.
2. Leave the rest sealed. Only one can is open at a time. That keeps the others fresh and stops you dipping into a stronger step on a whim.
3. Give each step several days. One pouch on a busy morning tells you little. A few days of ordinary use tells you a lot.
4. Move one step at a time. Open the next can up only when the current one has felt light for a while, consistently. Never jump from 5mg to 15mg.
5. Step back without fuss. If a new step feels like too much, take the pouch out and return to the can you were on. Same taste, less strength.
6. Stop when it feels right. You may never open every can. Landing on 5mg or 10mg and staying there is a good result, not a wasted box.

Keep a simple scorecard

For each can you open, jot down one word after a few days: too light, right, or too much. It sounds fussy, but it stops you second-guessing later.

What to do with the cans you don't need

You'll probably finish the sampler with one or two cans unopened. That's the price of not buying blind, and there are sensible ways to handle it.

• Pass them on only to an adult who already uses that strength. Never to someone new to pouches, and never to anyone under 18.

Bundle or loose: the maths

The rule is simple. The bundle wins only if you can genuinely see yourself using the 20mg, or you have no idea where on the ladder you'll land. If you already know you'll stop at 15mg, three loose cans are cheaper.

Two cart details are worth knowing. Free delivery starts at three items, and a bundle is a single item, so on its own it may not ship free; the line under your cart total tells you how many more you need. And loose cans added alongside a bundle count toward the ladder by themselves, so a bundle plus five loose cans gets 5% off those five.

Once the sampler has done its job, buy your strength loose. Five cans take 5% off, ten take 10%, and stocking up on CLEW covers the bigger steps.
