Most pouch cans are light, round and made of plastic, or cardboard and plastic. Many have a compartment in the lid for used pouches. The pouch count is printed on the can; ZAR AirPouch, for example, lists 20 per can. These cans are made to be emptied and thrown away, not kept for years.

That works for most people. Trouble starts when a can lives in a trouser pocket all day: the lid gets knocked open, the can gets squashed, and used pouches end up where they shouldn't.

Original can or metal can?

Plenty of people use both: the original can stays sealed at home or in a drawer, and the metal can does the travelling.

Looking after a metal can

• Empty the used compartment every day. Don't let a day's pouches sit in there overnight.
• Clean it now and then. Wipe it out and let it dry completely before refilling. Fresh pouches don't belong in a damp can.
• Refill, don't top up. Finish one batch before adding the next, so older pouches don't sit at the bottom drying out.

What to put in it

Any standard 20-pouch refill fits, so check the count printed on the can you're decanting. A two-flavour setup works well for a long day: a mint for the morning and something different after lunch. On 19 October 2026 these were in stock:

A desk can and a pocket can

Here's a simple routine for an office day:

1. Desk can. Keep one sealed can in a drawer, away from a sunny window.
2. Pocket can. In the morning, fill the metal can from the desk can, and carry only that.
3. One open can at a time. Spares stay sealed until you need them. An open can dries out.
4. Car rule. Never leave a can on the dashboard. A parked car in a Gurgaon summer dries pouches out quickly.
5. The rest at home. Keep the remainder of your order somewhere cool, closed and out of children's reach.

Used pouches at the office

Good pouch etiquette is mostly about the used ones.

• Lid or lower compartment first. Pop the pouch in and bin it later.
• Bin it wrapped. A tissue around it before it goes in the bin. Nobody wants to see one.
• Never in a coffee cup, a pantry sink, a plant pot, on a meeting-room table, on a washroom floor or in the car park.
• Don't pass the can round. A colleague who doesn't use nicotine shouldn't start because you offered. Adults 18 and over only.
• Follow your building's rules. Some offices have their own policy on nicotine of any kind, and it covers pouches too.
