Dry versus moist

Moisture is the other half of format. Snus users know this already: Swedish snus comes in moist "original" portions and drier "white" portions. White pouches vary in the same way.

The cleanest comparison on our shelf is Siberia. Siberia -80° White Slim and Siberia -80° Slim Dry are both 33mg, both slim and both the same ice-cold -80° mint. The Slim Dry carries less moisture than most pouches, so it feels crisper and more direct in the mouth. Same strength on paper, different feel.

Across the rest of the shelf:

  • Drier: Kelly White makes dry pouches in slim and mini formats. ZYN pouches are generally drier than VELO's.
  • Moister: Helwit and Après No.8 make moist pouches that release flavour quickly. VELO sits on the moist side too, and CLEW falls between ZYN and VELO.

A moist pouch tends to get going faster and gives off a little more liquid. A dry one feels firmer and neater. Neither is stronger by default, so read the mg.

Which format suits which part of your day

One trap to watch: format doesn't change strength. A Siberia mini is still 33mg and a PABLO mini is still 15mg. If you're choosing a small pouch to stay discreet, check the number as well.
