What's in a nicotine pouch? The ingredient list, explained

A can of CLEW Menthol 15mg nicotine pouches

A nicotine pouch contains nicotine, plant-based fibre that gives the pouch its body, water, a pH adjuster, sweeteners and flavourings, all wrapped in a thin fleece pouch. There's no tobacco leaf in it, which is what separates a white nicotine pouch from traditional snus (our snus in India guide covers that difference). Exact recipes differ by brand, and the can lists them.

This guide goes through a typical ingredient list line by line, explains what each part does, and shows you how to read the back of a can.

The typical ingredient list

Turn over a can of ZYN, VELO or CLEW and you'll see something close to this, though not always in this order or with these exact names:

Ingredient What it is Why it's there
Nicotine Usually as a nicotine salt The active ingredient. The mg figure on the can tells you how much
Plant-based fibre Often microcrystalline cellulose (E460) The white filler that gives the pouch its body
Water Plain water Sets the pouch's moisture, which affects how it feels
pH adjusters Such as sodium carbonate (E500) or potassium carbonate (E501) Keep the pouch at a stable pH so the nicotine releases as designed
Sweeteners Such as acesulfame K (E950) or sucralose (E955) Sweetness without sugar
Flavourings Natural and/or artificial The taste: mint, mango, coffee and so on
Stabilisers or thickeners Such as gum arabic (E414) or hydroxypropyl cellulose (E463) Hold the mixture together evenly
Salt Sodium chloride A seasoning, as in food
Pouch material A thin, porous fleece Holds everything in while letting moisture through

The E-numbers are the same system used on food labels. They're simply standard names for each ingredient.

Each part in a little more detail

Nicotine

Most brands use nicotine extracted from tobacco plants and purified, often in a salt form. Some product lines use nicotine made synthetically instead. Either way, the number on the can is milligrams of nicotine per pouch (or occasionally per gram, so check). That number is what decides strength. Read our strength guide before you choose.

Plant fibre

This is most of what you see when you look at a pouch: a fine, white, slightly granular filling. It's there to carry the nicotine and flavour and give the pouch a comfortable shape. It's why these products are called "white pouches".

Water and moisture

Moisture is one of the biggest differences between brands. VELO pouches tend to be moister, so they start faster. ZYN pouches are drier, so they start more gradually. CLEW sits between. The ZYN vs VELO vs CLEW comparison goes into how that feels in practice.

pH adjusters

Sodium carbonate and similar carbonates keep the pouch's pH stable, so the nicotine releases consistently from the first pouch in the can to the last.

Sweeteners and flavour

Most pouches are sweetened with non-sugar sweeteners, which is why even mint pouches taste a little sweet. Flavourings do the rest. Cooling agents, which create the "icy" feel, often sit in this part of the label too. Read how to choose a flavour to see how cooling and sweetness change the experience.

Nicotine pouches vs snus

The two get confused, partly because pouch cans and snus cans look alike.

Nicotine pouch Snus
Tobacco leaf None Yes, ground tobacco
Colour White Usually brown
Nicotine source Purified or synthetic nicotine The tobacco itself

Everything we sell under ZYN, VELO and CLEW is the white, tobacco-leaf-free kind. Even flavours with tobacco in the name, like CLEW Golden Tobacco, are flavourings, not leaf.

How to read a can

  1. Find the strength. Look for "mg/pouch" or "mg/g". Per pouch is what you want for comparing cans.
  2. Check the format. Mini, Slim or standard tells you the pouch size.
  3. Scan the ingredients. If you avoid a particular sweetener or flavouring, this is where you'll find it.
  4. Note the pouch count. It's printed on the can and varies by brand and line.
  5. Look for the warning. Every can carries a nicotine warning. Take it seriously.

On our product pages we list strength per pouch, the flavour family and the brand, so you can compare before buying. Browse ZYN, VELO or CLEW, or see what's in stock.

What isn't in a nicotine pouch

  • No tobacco leaf.
  • No smoke, because nothing burns.
  • Nothing to spit.

That describes what the product is, nothing more. Pouches contain nicotine, and nicotine is addictive. They're for adults 18 and over who already use nicotine.

Questions people ask

Do nicotine pouches contain tobacco?

No tobacco leaf. The nicotine in most pouches is extracted from the tobacco plant and purified, and some lines use synthetic nicotine.

Is there sugar in nicotine pouches?

Most use non-sugar sweeteners such as acesulfame K or sucralose. Check the ingredient list on the can.

What is the white powder in a pouch?

Mostly plant-based fibre, usually microcrystalline cellulose, which carries the nicotine and flavour.

Why do some pouches feel wetter than others?

Different water content. VELO pouches are generally moister than ZYN's, which changes how fast they start.

What's the difference between a nicotine pouch and snus?

Snus contains ground tobacco leaf and is usually brown. A nicotine pouch has no tobacco leaf and is white.

How do I use one?

Under the top lip for 20 to 40 minutes. Full steps are in how to use a nicotine pouch. Want to buy? Delivery is free from 3 cans, with UPI or cash on delivery. Start with our ZYN in India guide.
